OLD age and arthritis go hand in hand. But a new impetus to arthritis is being provided by obesity. Keeping this in view, a joint event of discussion was conducted by Apollo Hospital, Delhi and Orthopaedic Doctors’ Association Chandigarh on the emerging advances in total knee arthroplasty and computer navigated knee replacement surgery.
The final session of the event, delivered by Dr Rajeev K Sharma, senior consultant orthopaedics and joint replacement surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi and a pioneer in computer navigated hip and joint replacement surgeries.
“The surgery is done through computer navigation, although it is not exactly knee replacement. It is somewhat similar to capping the tooth,” said Dr Sharma.
The advantages of computer-navigated surgery are many. The treatment has fewer chances of failure and post-operation recovery is quicker.
With manual surgery, there are chances of human error. But with the introduction of computers chances of such errors have been eliminated.
The computer navigated surgery costs around Rs 1.70 lakh and in north India is only provided by Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi.
