What is a Knee?

What is a knee? We all know what a knee is, however many of us don’t realize the complexities of this amazing joint.  For a simple definition of what a knee is, you can classify the knee as the main joint that connects the two main bones of the leg, the lower thigh bone which is called the femur and the upper shin bone which is called the tibia.  The knee cap itself is referred to as the patella.

Besides knowing what is a knee, there are other parts that are inside the knee.  There are two main parts of your knee; cartilage and ligaments.  Cartilage is very helpful to the knee by softening or cushioning shock to your knee.  Ligaments are important for controlling and stabilizing your knee as it moves around when walking slowly or playing sports.

Many people don’t ask the question of what is a knee or focus on their knees until they injure them.  The knee is one of the most prevalent parts of the body that gets injured from time to time, whether during sports, normal day to day life or through repetitive motion injuries.  Even if you knees are working perfectly, it is important to know what is a knee to prevent knee injuries.

Many people learn what is a knee when they are forced to go to their doctor or orthopedic due to a knee injury or rehabilitation therapy.  In fact, people suffering from knee injuries or in need of knee rehabilitation make up the largest percentage of orthopedic patients.  If you have any further questions or have a knee injury, it is important to consult your orthopedic physician and ask him or her what is a knee.
