Gov. Joe Manchin underwent successful knee replacement surgery Saturday at Cabell Huntington Hospital.
Dr. Ali Oliashirazi, professor and chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery for Marshall University’s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine and director of the Mary Hodges Joint Replacement Center at Cabell Huntington Hospital, performed computer-assisted knee replacement surgery on the governor’s left knee. Manchin injured his knee while playing football for West Virginia University nearly 40 years ago.
“The surgery went very well, and the surgeons felt good about the work that was done,” said Lara Ramsburg, spokeswoman for the governor. “He has been joking around and is in good spirits.”
Oliashirazi, who is nationally respected and has performed more than 650 computer-assisted knee replacements, utilizes an interactive computer screen, a camera and beacons attached to the patient’s leg and the surgeon’s probe and cutting tools, according to a prepared release from the governor’s office. Dr. Jim Bresch, another nationally recognized surgeon, performed a scope of the governor’s right knee to repair any damage that may have occurred due to overcompensation for his left knee difficulties, the release said.
The governor is scheduled to spend the next several days at Cabell Huntington recovering from the two procedures, according to Ramsburg.
